We are working in faster, higher expectation environments

You may be dealing with walk ins, double booking, emergency surgeries and that’s just before 11am.

You must schedule a break!

If you have 5 minutes to use the bathroom, you CAN take another 5 minutes to walk outside and clear your head.

This will help you reset, refresh, slow down and reset your focus. Eat a high protein snack to get you through the next few hours of surgery.  For optimal performance your brain  needs glucose as well, not more caffeine.

Employers:  You are not doing your team any favours by working them at a high level for 10 hours straight. They can’t work at a high level for that long!

Their productivity will dramatically reduce by the end of the day.  This is when mistakes occur, charges are missed and communication and engagement declines.

It is so important that everyone receives a break. Create a healthy environment & culture where regular breaks are encouraged and taken.

The team follows the lead of the senior veterinarians so ensure they are value their well-being and are taking breaks themselves.

P.S.  The day I wrote this, I had one of those busy days at the clinic.  Emergencies, many walk ins and lunch just didn’t happen.  I was focussed and snacked throughout the day.  That night when I finally arrived home, my brain was exhausted.  I had been ‘on’ for nearly 12 hours working at what I thought was a high level.  I know after 8 hours though, your performance does decline despite what you think.

All I know is that is not my idea of an enjoyable, fulfilling work day.  I am very grateful that every day isn’t like that as I know personally for me, I would be on the path to mental exhaustion and burn out.
